One thing i am curious about is how you have reasoned around the original rangers personalities and their relationship in their corrupted forms. Do they consider eachother as rivals, do they hate eachother? Or are they acctualy loyal to eachother. In the original (yes i guess we don follow that one to the letter, but stil) it was as if they "liked" eachother.
The only Shadow Rangers who interact with each other are Kate and Jane, who are paired up for this mission.
DeleteI wanted to give each character as much as possible a different personality. With more focus on story than ever, there was finally an opportunity to do that. I don't want every villain to be a random carbon copy of the "perfect" villain. That's no fun. Then we wouldn't be looking at "Kate", but at "random opponent #3" (for example).
In the particular case of Kate and Jane, it's just a simple matter of one thing leading to another.
At first, only Kate would be in the Hiro scene. (The only Shadow Ranger to have appeared in Gaia earlier so far.) But the magic that would be used on Hiro reminded me more of what a succubus does to her victims. And would you believe it? We happened to have another Shadow Ranger whose corrupted form can be explained as a succubus!
So the scene got adapted to feature them as a duo. I wanted them to have different personalities though. We are in no way bound to their interpersonal relationships in the Shadow Rangers series, because the whole corruption could have changed their character anyway. (Just look at Emma in 4 and Mimi in this chapter.)
We started with the popcorn joke as random sarcasm. I liked this bickering among them and came up with a few more jokes. Kate just really worked well as the target of these jokes. I mean, I too think that Jane is a lot more useful with such powers than Kate...so she deserves it! >_<
And in Kate's case, it led to a sort of running gag to have her say "shut up" and other ways to have her mention something about "be quiet", all leading to the "STOP TALKING!!!" climax at the end.
Whoa! A much bigger reply to your question than I planned!
Anyway, consider Kate and Jane as two loyal friends who get along great, but don't mind a little sarcasm. And one of them happens to be better in this than the other. Don't read the "shut up" as an expression of anger, but more as an "okay, you win this one."
I also remember that Kate and Jane iteracted a little in the end of the original. And i did interpret their bickering between eachother as sarcasm and dry humor. Was curious if a got it right. :)

Amy as an example, at one point insinuated that Jane was a lesbian that was intressted in her. So there ws a little bakstory and personality traits there. Wonder if G9 was aware of that ;)
Well Jane is suppose to be more powerful than Amy and Kate isnt she? Didnt she get like extra power when she got the wings and the fangs from the emperor?
I have to say i had a little hard time to accept Kate as the one with that kind of humor and sarcasm. I tried to remember if any one earlier in the series made that kind of gags the only two persones i can come up with is Amy and Alayeh. But at the same time we have seen Kate in Gaia before and see seem to have been turned a little more bad ass.
But yes, i do get that they have two personalities. Before and after corruption. And that the later it can change with time. :)

Ah yes, Jane had a few lines of text in Gaia 2, you're right. But that was little more than a cameo indeed. Kate was the only one who had some sort of role. Probably for no other reason than that G9 just really likes Kate very much. ^_^
No acctualy i can accept Jane as a bad ass character. She was tuff, she was the only one who resisted the transformation. She even tried to kill the emperor. So i can accept her being like that. Kates attitude was new and a little suprising to me. But we have seen her in other Gaia-issues acting like a henchman to the emperor. So ok, i guess she can have become more bad ass. :) And perhaps she was rather brutal in the end of Shadowrangers?

But Amy was there to and both Amy and Kate was in the extras that G9 made to the first issue of Gaia. So we have seen all of the ex rangers in some way in Gaia. But Kate and the queen are the two we have seen the most. And yes im well aware that G9 loves Kate the most xD.
I have to say that i liked the face Jane had earlier in Gaia more than the new one. I dont know why though. But beside from that it looks great. Its just Janes wings that keep changing. Dont now why g9 dosnt use the same wings he used for her in the earlier parts of Gaia?
And now i think i start to sound really whiny. It was really good.
About Jane's face, I think it now looks a lot more like the face she used to have as a normal human being.

I really cant say yes on that. I really, really liked her looks in shadow rangers 4, but i think she looked even better later in shadow rangers. She was freeking gorgeous in the issue where she was turned ^_^

First, it's you, yes you who changed me. Believe it or not. It's your comic who made me realize, comic without proper story, is not a comic. No matter what, even for X rated comic that we make. Sex scenes without proper storyline would be just a waste, just like B-class JAV or Porn movies.
But the story can change everything. Even a simple "money scenes" would be extremely "HOT" when the pace, timing and story is "perfect".
It's Dr. Grey.M.P (yes he is a doctor...with M.P --> Master of Por...ups...^_^)

Your comic has better story line, the pace, has a good balance of story telling and money scene.
While mine, just focus on how to get those cute girls undressed and corrupted.
Yes, maybe for some reader, it would be enough, just like some hardcore XXX movies, with no storyline.
But I want to improve it too. Leveling up, just like in an RPG.
So it's mpgrey who guide me with this story telling process.

And while we are talking about making the story more believable I would like to make a suggestion : if You are afraid to show something realistically and naturalistically don't show it at all. It's a bit stupid when text says one thing and panels show the other. As it was for example with loosing of virginity by those corrupted girls in previous chapters. I'm glad this episode is consistent. Best chapter to date.

ReplyDeleteI still feel a little uncomfortable being more involved in the production process than as a simple proofreader only. G9 had plenty of readers following the comics he made by himself, so who am I to think that I should push my own ideas through to try to make the comics even better?
So I'm very happy to see my involvement is appreciated and I'm not seen as an uninvited guest at the G9-party.
Gaia 5 is the 4th book I was involved in, and if I compare it to Gaia 4 (which was my first to be involved in), I can hardly believe how much progress we have made in the relatively short time between them.
My biggest thanks goes to G9 for allowing me to work and help as I've been doing. And for being so professional to keep up with my endless nagging about the tiniest details. (Like adding or removing spaces after triple dots, or changing shapes of text balloons and moving their position by a few millimeters.)
So if I have a say in the matter, I'd very much like to keep on working together like this.
And as a special thank you to everyone else: thanks for all the positive replies (so far^^)! Thanks for showing us that we have story-telling skills that go beyond the 18+ and fetish-related stuff the comics are primarily known for. In other words: thank you for liking this chapter depite it featuring no direct Ranger corruption or obvious build-up to it.
It was a bit of a gamble to purposely slow the pace down and not give the fans what they want (main character corruption). I'm glad it paid off.
That said....I wonder how much longer we can keep our girls out of trouble.... Their situation is not looking good!

ReplyDelete1) the graphics are kind of good, I'd love their faces and just at first glance is quite obvious to see the work and love you put in your work
2) I'm kind of relieved from the way you properly assemble GAIA, story and sex are quite well combined, and despite having a little more dense plot (quite good by the way), you didn't saturate it whit a lot of dialog, in fact is quite balanced the story/sex/action.
3) At least I'm not disappointed to have not a corrupted ranger on this one (and I believe you compensate it pretty good, by corrupting not just one, but two girls). And so, now you can play/corrupt each Ranger in different ways more softly (and like I said before, the longer the corruption last, the more you enjoy it, don't you agree?)
Finally I want to thank you for all your hard work, wonder what will come for GAIA 6 and ask about Pretty G soldiers 2 which also I liked a lot (and It's not even in the progress bars :S)

DeleteOk, i have read it through almost two times and i have to say its really a couple of steps above anything so far when it comes to story and plot. Not that there havent been plot before, but now its a little more. Every scene is getting more time, which is good, it give more time for good dialog. Even though to be honest a comic never have that much space so story is always hard to tell in a comic. But this really is doing it in a good way.
ReplyDeleteOne thing that crossed my mind is that i some times when you show pictures that really dosnt say that much im getting the feeling that you not just want to show how good you are at this by now, but that you actually want to say something with that picture. You could use text pannels sometimes i think. Its not something you have to do. Narration through textboxes can be irritating to if it is over used.
I can clearly see a structure in the story, you have one long sex scene, story and action and last a cliffhanger, i love it. I have seen structure in story before in your work but i think you reallt nailed it this time. I hope you are carefull though not to use exactly that structure every time. Sometimes there might not be a scene with brainwashing and sometimes there might be no sex scene.
I will read it trough one more time today. I really tried to look for some of those inconsistencies that you miss some times. And i really didnt find much. Janes wings are the most obvious and the scene with the redhead hade a flaw where there is a extra character that shouldnt be there. Minor problems however.
You have to excuse the long and probably pointless ramblings. Have been up all night studying. GAIA 5 was really good.
ReplyDeleteOh yes, that movie "Bordello of Blood". Its not a bad movie. Its a b-horror movie. If you know that its funny as hell. Its worth watching just to see Angie Everhart.
And i really hope that Lucian dont kill the emperor that some wanted. It would be horrible if evil Legolas did that. It would be an ending that rivals that of Mass effect 3. Just horrible
The textbox use is really a matter of opinion I strongly disagree with. I try to use them as little as possible because I don't think they add much to the storytelling in a comic structure with textballoons.
ReplyDeleteThey work perfectly in comics like those found on mccomix or the ones from droid447, but that's because they use a slideshow-like format with plenty of room to spare.
I think they only distract in a comic structure as we use with multiple pictures on one page.
I needed one on page 63 to tell it's the "next day" because that can't really be made obvious in another way without forcing it.
(Hiro: "Ah good morning Emma! Still sleeping in your tube even though it's a bright new sunny day? Just 25% more...)
And sometimes I use them for new locations that I want to remove any possible confusion about.
In all other cases, I try not to use them at all because they'd end up saying little more than "meanwhile" or "a little while later".
And if you use them once, then why not use them in all other similar cases as well? After which it would become one cluttered mess.
An example of where I left them out on purpose is the evacuation scene. The scene shifts a lot from the Rangers to Senna to Annie to Amy to Annie again etc. It would be a part of the comic where textboxes could have fit, but I think the pictures tell the story by themselves.
And sometimes there is a whole series of consecutive pics without any text such as 09+10, 35, and quite a few in the battle scene.
We could fill them up all Marvel comics-like with endless trash-talking and wise-cracking or with many more "aargh", "ugh!", and "oomph" but why do that if it isn't really necessary?
Don't worry. I know you didn't really mean to tell us that we should use more boxes and that it was only a suggestion. Just giving my reasoning for free, I suppose. ^_^
And from reading the comments, I don't think people asked for Lucian to kill the emperor; they only ask for an epic battle. You know, with popcorn and pom poms and stuff!
Well as i said. Text boxes should be used sparingly. Pointing out obvious stuff is one of those things that makes them irritating. Or when there are more text boxes than pictures. The idea with comics is to tell a story with pictures after all not text. However text boxes are usefull when it comes to describe things that the picture cant tell. If done right text boxes can be like a dungeon master in a game of d&d when it comes to emerge the player/reader in the story and the enviroment. But as i said, text boxes can be wrong, verry wrong. So i fail to see where we disagree.

I dont say that text boxes is under used or uset to much. I just say that i do think there are room to use them. In the beginning for example. Where are we? When are we? How much time has passed since the last time we visited this world? Is it a cold silent night where the only things that can be heard are a pair of running feets? Or is it a warm and calm day in the peaceful city? Don´t be afraid to describe things for us when there might be things that pictures can´t tell us. :)

DeleteI'm just a poser/DAZ artist, not making from 0, just add some morphs, edit here and there, mixing together, add some light, and pose them, TADA!
The Real "3D/CG" artist are the one who sculp, model and sell the CG mesh at DAZ / renderosity.
